French War Memorial – in the Puducherry, a Memorial to the Brave

The French War Memorial in Puducherry is one of the sites of interest as the place pays reverent tribute to those soldiers who were sacrificed during World War I. It is in Goubert Avenue and is near the Promenade Beach. This is a historical site which is calm and sober to remind us of the past.

This Memorial was commissioned in 1937 and that year it was opened down by the then Governor Crocicchia in 1938. It has been used as an icon of bravery and sacrifice not least by the people who fought alongside the French against the war.
Special Event Bastille Day

The memorial is always illuminated with lights on the same date each year, on 14 th July (Bastille Day The French National Day). There is a special ceremony dedicated to the memory of the soldiers who suffered and hundreds of locals and tourists come here so that to pay their respects.

  • The entry is available throughout the week, 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM
  • Recommended visiting time: Morning or closer to the sunset when atmosphere is much calmer
