Why French Food in Pondicherry is Special

French cuisine in Pondicherry is not just imitation – it’s the real thing! Many local families have been cooking French food for generations, keeping old recipes alive. The city also attracts French chefs who fall in love with Pondicherry and decide to stay here, bringing authentic French cooking techniques.

Chez Francis

Chez Francis is a restaurant with a very long history. The building is more than 250 years old – it was built in the 1760s.

This restaurant is part of a small hotel called Dune de L’Orient. The hotel was started by a man named Francis Wacziarg. It is a boutique hotel, which means it is small and special.

A history expert named Aman Nath worked hard to fix and restore this old building. He made sure to keep the old style and feeling from the 1700s.

The walls have a special type of plaster called Chettinad plaster. This traditional plaster was carefully saved and kept as it was. The red oxide floors (a type of old-style flooring) were also repaired and kept original.

Before the restaurant opened, the courtyard was full of wild trees and moss growing on the walls. It looked abandoned. But it was cleaned up and turned into a beautiful dining area.

Some trees and plants were kept to give a natural look. Red brick flooring was added to the courtyard. The red bricks look beautiful with the Chettinad plaster walls.

Today, Chez Francis is famous for two things:

  1. Creole food – a special type of cooking that mixes French and local flavors
  2. Romantic atmosphere – it’s a perfect place for couples and special dinners

Anthé Cafe

Anthé Cafe is very close to Promenade beach – just a short walk away. This cafe is special because it mixes coastal style with Asian food.

The cafe kept its old traditional design and layout. They added comfortable seating where you can sit and enjoy the cool sea breeze, especially on Sunday mornings.

The Look and Feel:

The walls are painted soft white, which makes the cafe feel bright and clean. Wooden door frames and window frames add warmth to the white walls. The furniture is made of cane (a natural material), which gives a traditional and rustic look.

In the middle courtyard, the floor has tiles that look like old cobblestones (rough stones). This creates a comfortable and relaxed feeling. It also gives you a nostalgic feeling – like going back in time.

Natural Beauty:

There is a beautiful tree growing right in the middle of the seating area. On the first floor, green creeper plants hang down from the edges. These natural touches make the cafe even more charming and beautiful.

The whole atmosphere is perfect for relaxing with good food while feeling the ocean breeze nearby.

Villa Shanti – A Perfect Mix of French and Indian Charm

Villa Shanti is a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of White Town, Pondicherry. It was created by Segiyane Sylvain Paquiry, an Indian-born expat who wanted to bring together the best of both worlds — Indian warmth and French elegance.

Pondicherry, with its mix of French and Tamil culture, was the perfect place for his dream project. Paquiry teamed up with French architects Tina Trigala and Yves Lesprit to carefully restore an old heritage building in White Town. What once was a traditional house is now the charming Villa Shanti.

The hotel has 15 stylish rooms and an in-house restaurant that is very popular among visitors. The restaurant offers two types of seating — a cozy indoor area in the old part of the house, and an open courtyard patio where you can relax and enjoy the fresh air.

The design of Villa Shanti perfectly blends French simplicity and Indian beauty. The white walls and minimal décor give a calm, European feel, while the murals, textiles, and local touches bring out its Indian soul.

Whether you’re staying at the hotel or just stopping by for a meal, Villa Shanti gives you the true Pondicherry experience — a peaceful mix of heritage, culture, and modern comfort. It’s one of those places where you can truly feel the French connection of India.

Coromandel Cafe

This restaurant is very famous and popular in Puducherry. Many people want to eat here, so you need to book a table in advance.

The cafe is inside a beautiful French building called La Maison Rose. This building is in the old heritage area of Puducherry. People know it well because of its lovely pink color and the palm trees in front of it.

When architect Abhhay Narkar was asked to design this restaurant, he had two goals. First, he wanted to keep the old French style of the building. Second, he wanted to make it look different from other buildings nearby.

He got his main idea from the palm trees at the entrance. Palm trees became the special theme for the whole restaurant. You can see tall palm trees in the middle courtyard. Inside the restaurant, artists from Bhopal painted palm tree designs on the walls. These paintings are done on lime walls and look very beautiful.

The palm trees give the restaurant a nice tropical feeling. Even though this area has French-style buildings, the palm trees add a special Indian coastal charm to the place.
