Statue Old Lighthouse, Pondicherry A Classic French Wonder at the Coast
The Puducherry Old Lighthouse is quite a lovely send-off of the colonial history of the city. A 1836 construction by renowned French engineer L. Guerre, it is an old historic lighthouse on Beach road and is one of the oldest infrastructure sites still standing in the city.
A Piece of History
The lighthouse is 29 meters and constructed on a solid rectangular base. It was also a destination point that ships in the Bay of Bengal found their way to especially around Red Hills. They consisted of three specialties: a stairway, a watchman door and a small shop.
Even though it ceased its operation after a new lighthouse was constructed in 1970 at Kirapalaiyam Village, the former construction remains a wonderful piece of architecture and beauty. It has been turned into a museum today with different cultural programs and music festivals organised.
When to Go
The lighthouse is always open to the public between 3 down to 7 PM daily. In the late afternoon, it is perfect when one would want to get a breathtaking view of the sea, particularly sunset.
