The Villianur Temple, also called Sri Gokilambal Thirukameswarar Temple is one of the most eminent Hindu temples in Puducherry. This temple is a very beautiful one devoted to Lord Shiva and here shiva linga form in this temple is worshipped as Thirukameswarar.
The temple situated in Villianur town is not only a religious place but also a religion and history marker of Tamil culture.
History and Myth
A Chola king constructed the temple back in the 12 th century. The legend said that the king was a leper. He was cured after praying to Lord Shiva in this holy place. The king erected this great temple in honor of the Lord to appreciate Him.
Design and Architecture
The temple has been constructed in the Dravidian style. It has:

- High and spacious Gopuram (tower)
- Delicate tall pillars that are artistically made
- Tranquil praying and contemplation gardens

- The best known of the annual festivals is Brahmotsavam in MayJune. In this festival:
- A huge 50-foot idol of temple chariot of Lord Shiva is plowed along the streets.
Believers all over make it to the scene to draw the chariot because it is the desire of the Lord.
- It is among the largest religious festivals of Pondicherry.
